?Students from the Foundation Degree in Contemporary Art Practice at Leek College are holding a major exhibition of their work at the prestigious Nicholson Gallery starting this week.
The free exhibition named “2012 Astound” opens on Saturday 26th May 2012 and runs for a month, showcasing stunning contemporary artwork including textiles, jewellery, glass, fine art and more from all three years of this part-time course.
27 students from the College will be using the exhibition as a springboard into their careers as artists and designers, and work is for sale at the event.
Anne-lise Fraser, Course Leader, said: “This is a really vibrant exhibition that looks so professional and shows the dedication and hard work of all our students. The diverse range of specialisms means that there is something for everyone.”
The students have organised all aspects of the exhibition, including raising funds for publicity material. Local businesses including Colloco, the North Staffordshire Magazine, MWB Consultancy Ltd and F Ball and Co have all made generous donations.
Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has also made a grant through their Arts and Leisure department towards the marketing of the exhibition, which will attract visitors and tourists to Leek.
There will be a competition for children to enter and the prizes are family tickets for the Alton Towers Resort. These have very kindly been donated by the Theme Park.
The free exhibition runs from Saturday 26th May until 23rd June 2012, Mon-Sat, 10am-4pm (excluding Bank Holidays) at the Nicholson Gallery in the Leek Library building.
The College’s Summer Exhibition, featuring work from the Foundation Diploma and A Level Photography students, is also open and free to the public for one week from 18th June at Leek College University Centre.
