Nail Art Succes
Two students from Leek College are out to prove they’re the best in the country when they compete in the finals of the VTCT WorldSkills UK Beauty Therapy competition on Saturday June 26.
Nail Technology students Kerry Thompson and Victoria Bowyer earned their places in the national finals following an outstanding achievements at the regional heats held during the recent Beauty UK event at Birmingham NEC.
Kerry, from Tean, won the regional Nail Art competition with her colourful creations on an English Garden theme, while Victoria, from Leek, was winner in the Nail Enhancements category.
The two, who are based at the college Bodyworks Salon and completing their NVQ Level 2 in Nail Services this summer, are now preparing hard for their effort in the finals at Derby College.
Kerry, who was also regional runner-up in Nail Enhancements, will be using her creative talents to design a set of award-winning nails on a carnival theme while Victoria is aiming for the perfect finish with her nail enhancements.
“This is a great achievement for Kerry and Victoria – they really deserve to be in the finals,” commented Nail Technology lecturer Sam Watkinson.
“Competitions like this are very important in improving skills – what they learn in the competition is taken back to the salon,” added Sam, who also acts as a national judge on the competition circuit.
“In the run-up to the finals they will be spending hours not only on their techniques but working with their models – finding the right model can be one of the most important factors in success.”
“I couldn’t believe it when I found out I had reached the finals. Now I’m very excited about competing,” commented Victoria, who plans to continue her studies by moving on to a hairdressing course in the Bodyworks salon in September.
